Butchers Prior to the Ansell

Research into butchers prior to the Ansells

Being new to the world of genealogy and historical research I didn’t really know where to begin, but Maldon is fortunate to have The Plume Library, a rich source of local historical information. By looking at old trade directories in the library I began to build a picture of who had been at 5 High Street. I also discovered the names of butchers trading in other shops in Maldon.

The discovery of these names then posed me another question as it had shown that in the 19th century there had been a number of butchers in Maldon named Raymond. This was quite an amazing discovery as I didn’t know much about the Raymond family history because Sidney Raymond had been orphaned at the age of 6yrs. This meant I knew very little about his past and he had never spoken about anyone in his family having been a butcher.
